Recently we have begun to use certain antibiotics not just for their anti-bacterial effects, but for their inhibition of tissue destruction by enzymes called collagenases. Collagenase is an enzyme or protein that breaks down collagen, the major structural protein of bone, ligaments and tendons. By inhibiting this enzyme, it is thought that the inhibition of bone destruction may be possible.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal, men < 50 who had advanced periodontal disease were found to be 2.6 times more likely to die prematurely and 3 times more likely to die from heart disease than those with healthy teeth and gums. People with gingivitis and periodontitis had a mortality rate that was 23-46 % higher than those who did not. The converse is also true- The absence of periodontal disease reduces your risk.
So what conclusions can we draw from this data?
- A healthy mouth is an integral part of a healthy body.
- Think globally, act locally
- Eat well, exercise and take good care of yourself but
- Do not forget to keep your mouth healthy by brushing, flossing and getting regular professional dental care.
New hope for osteoporosis patients.
New medications for the treatment of osteoporosis may actually build bone. Drugs traditionally used to treat osteoporosis were anti-resorptive that is they slow or halt the rate at which bone dissolves. This new medication is based on the naturally occurring hormone called PTH or parathyroid hormone. In a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, impressive increases in bone mineral density and reduction in fractures were observed with this drug. Drug maker Eli Lilly hopes this new medication called teriparitide [Forteo] will receive FDA approval shortly and revolutionize the treatment of osteoporosis.
